Vegetarian weight loss diet

How many of us haven't thought, at least once in our lives, to become vegetarians? Some to have a lifestyle they consider to be healthier, others to avoid feeding on animals they share life on the planet with or to act according to the religion they practice. Here you can find, in a nutshell, the risks and the benefits of the vegetarian diet.

Few people know that there is more than one type of vegetarianism and that the nutritional consequences of each diet is different. Thus, there are the vegans, people who consume exclusively foods of vegetal origins; the fructivores; the pesco-vegetarians, the ones that add fish to the diet; lacto ovo vegetarians; ovo vegetarians; semi-vegetarians, etc. Well, yes, vegetarianism can be a diet option to the extent to which those opting for this eating style are aware of their nutritional needs and the nutrient offer provided by the diet.

Pay attention to the essential minerals!

Some nutrients are present exclusively in foods of an animal origin (e.g. vitamin B12), others have a very low bio-availability (the digestive and metabolic usage possibility) when they are extracted from vegetal food products (especially the mineral elements - calcium, iron, magnesium, which are "stolen" by fibers and eliminated through your stool). For children growing up in vegetarian families, the parents must be aware of the fact that they have special needs according to their growth period. So, in order to compensate the absence or the low level of some nutrients, no matter the age, vegetarians must choose supplements and fortified food products, today available in many shapes and forms on the market. If, in their diet, there is at least one category of animal origin (dairies, eggs or fish) supplementation is no longer an issue but in special cases.

The transitory periods of vegetarianism, represented by Christian-orthodox lent face the organism with no problems, the organism being able to adapt to food changes for a short period of time, of a maximum of a few weeks.

Calories, numerous even in certain vegetables

Perhaps you've heard some of your friends saying that they want to become vegetarians in order to lose weight. Could this be true?! If we sit and analyze a table with the composition of these food products, the previous statement may sounds false. Calories don't actually care for the presence or absence and meat and there are many vegetarian products with a high calorie content (peanuts, olives, processed cereals, black chocolate, etc.). Even more so, some vegetarians, to prepare the food faster, add extra amounts of oils or margarine that contains a lot of calories. Although logic states that a vegetarian doesn't have more chances than an omnivore to actually lose weight, a recently published study states that obesity and diabetes in adults are far more seldom for vegetarians than other people.

Vegetarians, protected against diabetes and obesity

The study lasted for 4 years and it analyzed over 60 000 people. The results proved that vegans had the lowest level of body mass index that slowly increased for lacto-ovo vegetarians, pesco-vegetarians, semi vegetarians and scaling a maximum for omnivores. Similar to that, no matter the gender, age or education, the risk of diabetes increased according to the presence of food products of an animal origin in their diet. Scientists leading the study are amazed of the results, seeking explanations that fail to convince up to now. The facts remain: vegetarian diets protect you against extra weight. Obviously, without any excesses, because calories may be present in a pork stake or in a lentil curry, just as well. And even if we can't completely give up animal food products, at least we can enjoy the rich variety of plants and fruits of the summer, leaving stakes and meat for the cold January days!
