Health benefits of Garden Angelica (Angelica arhanghelica - Fam. Umbelliferae)Popular names: Holy Ghost, Wild Celery, and Norwegian angelica. A special plant that is very rarely found in the spontaneous flora, but that is extensively cultivated for its effects in different conditions. It is very useful in many conditions, but it can be consumed even by those who suffer of no disease for its special effects on the organism. The Chinese call it Dong-Quoi and also recommend it for many conditions.
Traditionally: the plant is cultivated to be used in pharmacies, in the alcoholic beverages industry and for preparation of appetizers and liquors. It was also a remedy for "strengthening the heart", as an expectorant and for calming stomach aches.
With the decoct mixed with vinegar, massages and baths were made against back pain and rheumatics. The root stalk and fruits mashed in yeast brandy were taken as treatment against internal conditions and as a gastric tonic.
The cataplasms from leaves anointed with rue leaves and honey were placed on snake and dog bites, after the blood was squeezed out of the wound.
Chemical composition of Garden AngelicaThe root stalk and the roots have a spicy smell and bitter-sweet taste and contain volatile oil 1%, rich in aromatic cyclic hydrocarbons, cumarin and furanocoumarin, angelic and valerianic acid, malic acid, angelin, starch, lactones, iron oxide, bitter substances, resins, tannin, sucrose, pectin.
Pharmaceutical action of Garden AngelicaGastric tonic and calming for abdominal pain. This plant can enhance the activity of female and masculine hormones and also set all the glands in the organism.
It is not recommended for women with a menses too abundant, because it helps exactly to hurry the menses (a decoct of seeds is consumed in amounts of 3 cups a day).
It is a stimulant for appetite and it is helpful especially for anorexia of a mental nature.
Ways of preparation:-2-5 g plant - the ground roots or seeds are left in 250 ml water for half a day. Filter in the morning and you can drink 3 such teas without warming them. It is the most effective treatment method with this plant.
Decoct:(for external use ) 10-15 g ground plant is boiled for 10 minutes, then filter. It can be used in all diseases where an external treatment is demanded.
Compresses, cataplasms that are to be changed according to tolerance. For pain or to act more rapidly, they can be applied warm, with boiled plants placed between 2 pieces of cloth.
Dry plant powder:2-4 g a day in all internal conditions. It can be kept under your tongue for several minutes and then swallowed with some water. It is the best and the quickest treatment for hormonal disorders. Due to the fact that is it administered under the tongue it reaches the hormonal system quickly, contributing to the hormonal adjustment. It should always be consumed 15 minutes before the meal. Decoct of 2 teaspoons of ground roots in 250 ml water. Boil for 15 minutes then filter. You can drink up to 2-3 cups a day.
Wine:place 50 g ground roots or seeds in one liter of wine (preferably white) produced by a private person. You can also add some cinnamon powder. Leave to room temperature for 8 days, shaking it often. After 8 days, filter and add wine to fill the remains to amount to one liter. Keep the mixture sealed, at a low temperature. Drink 100 ml a day, divided in 3 rounds. It is not recommended to drink this wine in too large quantities, because it can cause problems in the organism.
It is recommended to drink this wine 15 minutes before the main meals.
Tincture:place one part finely chopped plant (preferably finely ground with a coffee grinder) and 5 parts alimentary alcohol 70C in an hermetically sealed recipient. Let it mix for 5 days, shaking it often. Then filter and place in smaller recipients, at low temperatures, preferably in bottles of a dark color. It can be kept at a low temperature for up to 2 years.
Administration: place between 5 drops and 1 teaspoon of tincture in 100 ml water and take 3 times a day, 15 minutes before the main meals. It can be used for a longer period of time without any unwanted adverse reactions. It can also be used externally, diluted in water, for various conditions (aches, wounds, cancer, etc).
Vinegar:place 50 g ground plant in 1 liter apple vinegar and add honey. Keep for 8 days shaking often. Filter after 8 days. It can be drunk after the filtering. It is useful especially against itches of different natures and for pain. It is also effective for other treatments (hirsuteness).
This plant can be used for the following medical conditions: gastric acidity, intestinal and stomach conditions, aphrodisiac, acne, dizziness, angastric acidity, chest angina, anemia, anorexia, heart arythmia, arthritis, neurotic asthma, nervous disease, acute or chronic bronchitis, hot flashes, bulimia, cephalalgia, cancer, constipation, bruises, cosmetics, convalescence, uterine cramps, hormonal disorders especially female glands, diabetes, difficult digestion, indigestion, menstrual pain, neurovegetative disturbances, rheumatic pain, back and muscular pain, endometritis, enteritis, skin eruptions, intestinal ferments, gastritis, flu, chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, internal hemorrhage, high blood pressure, hypo menorrhea, impotence, indigestion, insomnia, delays in mental development, premature aging especially for women, irritations, hysteria, injuries of the skin, stomach and intestinal injuries, menopause (it helps the productions of estrogen and the lubrication of the uterus and also to a glandular adjustment), migraines, birth (it eases birth relaxing the muscles in the uterus and the ones in the intestines), nephritis, headaches, paralysis, prurigo, wounds, psoriasis (externally and internally consume celery and carrot then lie in the sun), rheumatics, wound sclerosis, swoons, general weakness, vaginal spasms, female and male sterility, stomatitis, stress, tumors, menses disorders, tuberculosis, stomach ulcer, skin ulcerations, vaginitis, shingles.
Of course these are the most significant uses for this plant; as stated before, this plant can be administered in any condition, especially when there is no clear diagnostic and a quick action is demanded. It is why everyone should have this plant around in the house. To keep it for a longer period of time, prepare a tincture from it and you can keep it up to 2 years, being very easy to use. Also, as a tincture, it works very fast, entering the blood stream in as little as 15 minutes from the administration.
