The brier (Rosa Canina) - Rosaceae family


   The brier is a thorny shrub that reaches 2-3 meters, with branches arching out. It appears as a variation of the wild rose. It is a medicinal plant known since ancient times, used as a remedy against rabies. The brier is spread in Europe, Western and Northern Asia.

the_brier    In medicinal purposes are used the fruit harvested in the months August - September, when the hips have turned dark red.The hips are, from a botanical point of view, false fruit, the real fruit being those small, hairy achenes inside.

   In the old times the brier was used as an alimentary tea. In the traditional medicine of yesterday and today it is known that the brier tea increases the body immunity. It is recommended in case of cold, gingivitis and toothaches.

the_brier    The active elements in hips are the vitamins A, B1, B2, C, P, K and E.Because of the large quantity of vitamin C it contains (500-100 milligrams for 100 grams of hips) other vitamins and mineral salts, the brier is the most efficient, sure and fast remedy against fatigue and fever. Pharmacological actions: vitamin tonic, normalizes peripheral circulation, diuretic, vermifuge.

   The seeds contained by the hips have a diuretic effect. The tea made of these seeds helps treating and curing kidney and bladder affections. The tonic effect of the hips tea shows that it is a wonder medicine for the anemic and even for the asthenic and moreover it is recommended for weight loss, as it is an excellent uric acid and toxin eliminator.

Natural treatments and applying techniques:

  1. Hips tea

  2.    The decoction is prepared of two spoonfuls of crushed hips, boiled 5-10 minutes in 500 ml of water. The fruit is put in the water when it is boiling, to avoid the loss of vitamin C. Drink two cups during a day.

       Major recommendations: fatigue, anemia, fever, headaches.
       Minor recommendations: hepatic pain, intestinal worms.

  3. Hips cold maceration

  4.    Is prepared of 100 grams of crushed hips, macerated in a liter of cold water for 12 hours. This remedy can be consumed as a refreshing drink if 100 grams of sugar are added and if after the filtration is supplemented with water until it reaches a liter.

       The maceration is recommended in treating anemia, mental and physical weariness, headaches.

  5. Hips syrup

  6.    The syrup is prepared of 200 grams of shredded hips pulp, over which are poured 1.5 liters of boiling water. It is left to macerate 12 hours and 500 grams of sugar are added. It is boiled until it reaches the consistency of syrup. It is recommended for anemia, convalescence.

  7. Diuretic seeds decoction

  8.    The decoction is obtained of 1-2 spoonfuls of seeds boiled 10-12 minutes in 250 milliliters of water. Drink 3-4 cups of tea a day.
