Choose a natural treatment for insomnia

Unfortunately this condition is becoming more and more often, especially among women (40% more women suffer from insomnia than men).

Insomnia is a condition that implies an ineffective sleep, whose part in regenerating the organism is no longer efficient. Insomnia doesn't necessary refer to the quantity, but also to the quality of the sleep. Thus, insomnia is that sleeping disorder that doesn't allow the organism to rest in a normal way.

This condition can be classified in 3 types, according to the sleeping habits:

- Insomnia manifested by having difficulties falling asleep. The person can have a relaxing sleep but, because he/she has trouble falling asleep and in the morning has a program to respect, the sleeping hours are less and become insufficient. Day after day, the quality of the sleep is affected and the condition of that persons worsens day by day.
- Sleep interrupted by waking often up. These people wake up many times a night and they feel tired and weak in the morning.
- Waking up too early. In these situations, the patients wake up too early, sleeping only a few hours without managing to fall asleep again. Their sleep is insufficient and incomplete.

Insomnia can also be classified as follows:

- Temporary insomnia: it can sometimes happen to a person to not rest efficiently. This transitory disorder last from one hour to a few weeks.
- Discontinuous - episodes of transitory insomnia recurring at irregular time intervals.
- Chronic - for a period of a few months, the patient couldn't sleep for more than a few nights a week.

What disturbs our sleep?

The causes are multiple and usually the "source" of insomnia depends on each person, on their daily and general experiences, their lifestyle, etc. Still, the most frequent causes that disturb our sleep are the following:

- prolonged stress, the most common cause;
- physical and intellectual overstrain;
- sedentary lifestyle;
- an unbalanced food diet, with rich meals in the evening or with an excessive consumption of beverages containing nervous tonic substances, like coffee, some teas, energy drink;
- chaotic sleeping program, working night shifts etc.;
- medicines like sedatives, sleeping pills whose usage was interrupted;
- unstable mental states like anxiety and depression;
- radical or sudden changes in your lifestyle;
- various conditions: endocrine, hepatic, alcoholism, conditions of the nervous system or affections that cause pain during the night, that don't allow rest, heart conditions etc.;
- working at the computer in the evenings or watching shows on TV.

The untreated insomnia leads to the consumption of all energy resources necessary for the organism to function on a daily basis. The conditions caused by this disorder vary from minor to very serious ones. As a result, continuous drowsiness, chronic tiredness, the decrease in the ability to concentrate and memorize, irritability, etc. The efficiency and intellectual and professional performances are affected. The immune system will be weekend, the organism will no longer be able to protect itself against the action of pathogen factors and the existing conditions can worsen. The patient will undergo powerful emotional changes, of anxiety, depression, etc. Behavior and personality disorders can also occur.

What remedies does nature provide us with?

The most frequently used ones are teas. Prepare infusions to be consumed with half an hour before going to bed.

You can use: valerian, geranium, lemon balm, poppy, valerian, dill or marjoram leaves, harvest mite, blackthorn, summer pheasant's eye, willow (prepare a decoct from 10 g of chopped bark for 200 ml water), yellow sweet clover, linden, nettle. There are many examples, but these plants have a renowned sedative effect.

Tinctures:

- tincture from valerian root: 20 de drops three times a day, last time before going to bed;
- tincture from harvest mite: 15 drops three times a day, last time before going to bed;
- tincture from geranium: 20-40 de drops twice a day.

Volatile oils

These are administered as drops. They should either be applied on a towel to be placed on your pillow or massage using them or you can warm them; no matter the technique, they manage to induce a sweet relaxing sleep. Use volatile oils of plants as: thyme, basil, lavender or orange. Use only one flavor, don't mix them.

Relaxing baths

A very pleasant method that has gained high recommendations from doctors. Take aromatic baths and the active substances will achieve their purpose both by inhaling them and by their absorption by the skin. These baths should be taken half an hour before going to bed. After getting out of the bath, it is recommended to slip into a fluffy bath robe in order to keep on your skin the substances in the bath and it is why you shouldn't wipe your skin with a towel. Don't hurry, stay in the bath tub for at least 15 minutes. It is recommended that prior to using it, you should dermatologically test the oil you wish to use to make sure you're not allergic.

These natural remedies should be used for approximately one month. You can also try other ways for getting rid of insomnia like homeopathy, acupuncture, psychotherapy etc. If you notice that your state is not improving, consult a specialist.
