Natural remedies for migraines

Everyone has had, at least once, a headache that appeared to resist all methods of curing it. And if this story is continuous, you might suffer from migraines.
It can take more than one form, so you should be careful.

The most frequent migraine includes headaches that are installed one step at a time, last for hours or days, in the right or left side of the skull and is many times perceived as pulsations.

Other signs are associated to it: digestive disorders (nausea, sometimes vomiting), intolerance to light (photophobia), intolerance to noise, the worsening of the headaches during physical effort.

The ophthalmic migraine is another form of migraines, where headaches are preceded by visual neurological signs: the occurrence of light spots, noticeable at first in the center of the eyeshot, then up to its periphery; lateral hemianopsia (the inability of both eyes to see to the left or the right).

Migraines in children

Approximately 5% of children can suffer from migraines, both boys and girls. Their seizures are usually shorter than those of adults, with headaches localized on their foreheads and with predominant digestive disorders.

Many times, the crisis ends with a recovery sleep. For some children, the recurring abdominal pain, vomiting, vertigo, appearing in seizures would represent the "migraine equivalents".

Children suffering from migraines are recommended to rest - sleeping is the simplest way of improving the situation.

Drug treatments can be used, but only if prescribed by the doctor. For older children, acupuncture and reflexotherapy can be of use.

Due to the small age of the patients, more than one type of tests and doctors of different expertise will be needed.

Causes and treatment

The pain is caused most likely by a dilatation of the cerebral arteries. Plus, there is an hereditary factor; one can notice several cases of migraines in the same family.

The treatment of the seizure must be performed as early as possible, at the start of headaches, in order for them to be effective.

If the usual painkillers are not enough use by-products of the rye ergot, like ergotamine tartrate (incompatible with antibiotics from the macrolide group and not recommended in particular during pregnancy).

The basic treatment is followed on a daily basis, having the purpose to diminish the frequency of seizures. Due to unwanted effects of drugs, it is not recommended but in frequent seizures, that render the patient unable to perform basic activities.

Mainly, by-products of the rye ergot are used, as well as anti-serotonins, anti-depressives. In general, one can find a suitable medicine after trying several ones without success.

The seizures are caused by various factors, but there are often the same for a single patient: stress or, on the contrary, physical relaxation, bed restrains, lent, lack or excess of sleep, noise or a smell, the period for women.

Some simple gestures can ease a migraine: apply pressure on the temple of the painful part or apply an ice compress or a hot one on your head.

Some other simple remedies include wearing colorful lenses, drinking a strong coffee or eating some sugar. They can all be helpful.

Sleeping in areas without noise or light can also calm down a migraine. For specific migraines there is a special treatment.

It is the case of migraines that appear only during menstruation and that can be prevented by applying a gel with estrogen.

A doctor before a diagnosis

It is recommended to consider talking to your doctor a good starting point to choosing cures and solutions for your migraines, as well as placing a proper diagnosis. First of all, you should announce your general practitioner of your pains and he/she could rule them as migraines or if you should check a specialist. As usual, the treatment, even if it involves plants, is recommended to be accepted by your doctor.
